Solvyns was born in Antwerp and sailed for India in 1790. In the next few years, he began documenting 18th century Indian culture and habitats through a collection of etchings. These included occupational pursuits, festivals and religious customs. This book was first published in parts with an undated title page, with following editions in 1804 and 1807. It proved to be very popular and stayed in print for several years. "The Costume of Hindostan" is a continuation of Solyvn's earlier work "The Manners, Customs and Dresses of the Hindoos," containing 250 plates and published in Calcutta in 1799.
