Malvi art is practiced in Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh). Paintings belonging to this art genra are mainly geometric. The patterns made on these paintings are known as Mandana patterns. There are seven festivals on which elaborate mandana pattern paintingsare made. These festivals include-Deepavali, in the month of Karthik, Makar Sakranti in Magha, Holi in Phalguna, Gangaur in Chaitra, Jyeshtha Krishna Amavasya, Teej on the third day of Savana and Shukla Paksha and Rakshabandhan again in the month of Savana. It is a ritual art and can be traced to every house in the villages. The characteristic motifs found in these paintings, are drawn in several ways. Either a single motif is drawn or a number of motifs are combined together forming chains which are woven into one another. Distinct symbols with definite meaning and purpose are used in these paintings. Shanta Bhati is a living legend in this art genre and currently lives in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh and continues to practice this rare painting tradition.
