The heritage of Kerala is a rich mosaic of many centuries created by many peoples. The original Cheras brought their temple arts; the Jews introduced the synagogue style of the 4th century; the Arabs brought the mosque from the heartland of Islam; the Christians contributed the art of church-making in a unique baroque of the tropics. The rich colours of the paintings offset the panorama of green landscapes. The surviving dance arts of south India were adapted into the powerful dance-drama of Kathakali, the coquetry of Mohiniattam and the sensitive abhinaya of Kudiyattam and Krishnattam. The elephant tusks were carved into ivories of the most exquisite shapes. The hard woods were recreated into tender gods. The rocks lent themselves to configurations of the various divinities in groups. The age-old tradition entered into the imaginative genius of modern painters like Ravi Varma, Madhava Menon, and K.C.S. Pannikar who assimilated the impact of the West and produced vital realistic, fanciful and abstract styles of their own. Marg celebrates the splendours of Kerala in this volume.

The rise and fall of the magnificent Vijayanagara empire, which lasted for over 300 years in the Deccan, is an inspiring saga of human genius overcoming the odds. In order to fulfil their destiny in the space and time given to them, the monarchs of this truly great state created vast architectural complexes among the dramatic rocks, as monolithic architecture without architects. And they generated a whole world of temples and palaces and symbols which remind us of the wonder that was south India in the middle centuries.
