Dhokra art is venerated as the oldest extant form of metal casting. In fact, the word, Dhokra itself means venerable and valuable. Its most famous example is the Dancing Girl from Mohenjodaro. Even today, the techniques and tools are not very different from those used by the artisans who created her, The term originates from the names of the makle and the female deities, Dhokra and Dhokri worshipped in many parts of Bastar, Chattisgarh. Dhokra is an ancient art being practiced in its most pristine form through millenia. The interesting thing is that Dhokra sculpture has been practiced for centures in the entire Bastar region with slight variationsm but without any mutual influences. Dhokra is a labour intensive and time consuming craft. One of the most compelling factors is scarcity, the process is geared to the use of as little metal as possible. For the artists of DHokra art, making these sculptures is a way of life. Their raw materials, subjects, processes keep them in close touch with the most basic and primeval elements With its themes and forms deeply entrenched in tradition, Dhokra art can truly be called an exquisite legacy of our land.
