Among the many different Warli dances, the Tarpa dance is the most popular one and traditionally celebrated during the September harvest till Diwali on moonlit nights. The entire village comes together on this occasion. The leader of the dance thumps an ornamental stick (ghol kanthi) in a rhythmic beat, while the others hold each around the waist and dance in a winding, ring formation. At the centre, a solitary musician plays on the "tarpa"-a wind instrument made of bottle gourd, bamboo, wax and palm leaves-providing the pace and tune of the dance.
