Chintan was born in 1972 in Partapur, Rajasthan. The artist began as a painter, but now creates sculptures and installations. Transforming painting and sculpture into a pop art hybrid, the painted imagery is often sourced from traditional Indian miniature painting, so on the whole the pieces tend to look forward and look back at the same time. Upadhyay is founder of artist initiative Sandarbh, a not-for-profit organization run by artists working in rural areas. The artist lives and works in Delhi.
This sculpture reinterprets his signature motif 'the baby'- Smart Alec or Chintu. The subject of Upadhyay’s works have often been babies, animated and stylised against a bold solid background. They are stripped of the simplicity of their vulnerable nature. From blank slate to something slightly more affected, the imagery of culture is impressed upon them visually in tattoo-like designs. Over the last few years, Chintan has been depicting images of babies that are usually male with exaggerated features and emotive faces. These futuristic-looking babies speak on issues of identity, mutation and culture which are a jumble of ideas and conventions, partly his own and partly borrowed.
