Both Amar Prem (1972) and Daag (1973) were released during Rajesh Khanna’s phase of Golden Jubilee Hits, where films ran for more than 50 weeks in theatres.
Amar Prem, directed by Shakti Samanta, narrates a poignant tale of a school boy who, ill-treated by his step-mother, befriends a courtesan, played by Sharmila Tagore, and her lover, played by Rajesh Khanna, who dote upon him.
Yash Chopra directed and produced Daag, anadaptation of Thomas Hardy’s “The Mayor of Casterbridge”, which became a super hit. It starred Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna, Raakhee (who won her first Filmfare award), Madan Puri, Kader Khan, Prem Chopra and A.K. Hangal.
