MOHINI - A VINTAGE OLEOGRAPH
circa 1930s
This oleograph is based on one of Raja Ravi Verma’s iconic works, Mohini on a Swing. It features Mohini, Lord Vishnu’s female avatar said to have risen from the churning of the ocean by the demi-gods and the demons. Art conservator Rupika Chawla observes that “...Ravi Verma has conceived this goddess leading the life of a normal woman, indulging in what such a woman would do” (Rupika Chawla, Raja Ravi Verma: Painter of Colonial India, Mapin Publishing, Ahmedabad, 2010, pg.211).
