A SET OF THREE NEWSPAPERS - "LA DOMENICA DEL CORRIERE JOURNAL"
TITLE: La DOMENICA DEL CORRIERE JOURNAL
The Domenica del Corriere was a popular Italian weekly newspaper. It ran for nearly a century from 1899 to 1989, and was famed for its stunning cover drawings. It was circulated every Sunday with the Corriere della Sera, but was also sold separately. Editions of the paper are rare to come across and are valuable among collectors.
The covers of these 20th century editions focus on the unrest in British India, and the numerous protests and movements led by pioneering freedom fighters in the span of two decades, leading to India’s independence. The August 1921 edition features the boycotting of foreign goods through the burning of a pile of clothes; artist R. Salvadori has captured the mounting tensions and fervour with great skill. The April 1930 edition features a striking scene by artist A. Beltrame, from the Civil Disobedience Movement initiated by Gandhi. Following India’s independence in 1947, the tedious process of integrating princely states with the newly formed India was not met positively by many rulers. One of them, portrayed in this 1948 edition by W. Molino, depicts a resilient prince Ali Khan Bahadur surrounded by his wives, seen pleading for protection. The by-line informs us that the prince surrendered to invading Indian troops a few days later.
