The traditional patterns in Ashfar rugs come from the Turkic Ashfar, a semi-nomadic tribe found in the mountainous regions of Iranian Azerbaijan, but finding its roots in Central Asia. This particular style of Persian carpet is unique with its connection to the Safavid dynasty of the 15th to 17th century. It possesses many elements unique to the nomads in its symbolism portraying the wilderness and villages, and its choice of saturated deep colours. Every piece maintains a strong spiritual essence of the tribe where their sacred knowledge had no other way to be passed on in their nomadic lifestyle except in imagery hand down through generations.
