Description

Human figures are highly stylised in the Odiya patachitra. In many ways they idealise the aesthetics of a perfect body: sharp, angular features, lotus-shaped eyes, perfectly proportioned torsos, and accentuated curves. Females are draped in fluid garments, and males wear a long scarf called an uttariya, leaving their torsos bare. Parida lends them his own lyrical touch through a rhythmic style of line drawing.

About The Dancing Line by Bijay Parida

National award-winning artist Bijay Parida's patachitras are based on on India's well-known mythologies. His work draws from themes central to Odisha's art and dance: the Shada Ritu (six seasons), Lord Vishnu's dashavatar, the Gita Govinda, the avatars of the gods Jagannatha and Balabhadra, and the two great epics: the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Birds, foliage, animals, figures and garments are captured in great detail on tussar silk. Parida's use of mineral pigment distinguishes his work from artists; who now increasingly use commercially available paint. The result is a world brimming with vibrant narratives.
