About CHANDARVO - Painted Shrines of the Mother Goddess
For the past 300 years, the Chitara families of the wandering Vaghari community have evolved a form of worship through art, devoted to the Mother Goddess or Mata. Being of a lower caste Vaghariswere prohibited from entering temples, prompting them to make their own temporary outdoor shrines of painted deities on cloth for worship.
StoryLTD is proud to present, "CHANDARVO : Painted Shrines of the Mother Goddess" works by artist Jagdish Chitara bought together by ARTISANS'.
“Jagdish Chitara‟s work is significant today as he practices the original form of painting as an act of worship, directly on cloth without any premeditated drawing. He uses the original red and black natural dyes, whose colors are enhanced by the Sabarmati waters – now scarce, as access is limited,” explains Radhi Parekh, Director, ARTISANS‟.
About this scared cloth, Radhi Parekh says, “These textiles were largely overlooked until the „70s when ethnographers Eberhard and Barbara Fisher, Haku Shah, and Jyotindra Jain sought to collect and document them, sensing the danger of being lost from global memory.”
ABOUT THE ART
The art of Mata-ni-Pachedi is a tradition passed on through the family. The Chitaras visualize Mata‟s many manifestations as hand-painted or block-printed images; the powerful central image of the Goddess Mother is surrounded by stories from myths, legends, epics and folk traditions.
"Mata‟ is worshiped as the ultimate protector of her children‟s well being, and commissions to the Chitaras address everyday hopes and fears.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jagdish Chitara began painting Pata-Ni-Pachedis when he was 15 years old and learnt the ancestral craft from his father. “Only those with a pure mind and heart are able to paint the Mata-Ni-Pachedi,“ Jagdish says. He feels connected with his ancestors when painting and often speaks of the great and beautiful work made by them.
Over time, Jagdish has developed a distinct imaginative style to depict the Mother Goddess and animate the stories and myths that surround her.
