Description

John Charlton was a renowned military artist known for his many memorable and vibrant battle scene paintings.

These chromolithographs of the officers of the Indian army in ceremonial uniform were created from sketches made by John Charltonfor the Royal Diamond Jubilee Pictures on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. They were published for special sale in connection with the Diamond Jubilee.

The Indian Army or the British Indian Army was mainly made up of the native Indians who worked under the command of the British and at times European soldiers and commanders. Several units were raised by the British East India Company to work in the service of the native rulers and also to manage the defenses of the Presidency towns. After the First Indian uprising or the Indian mutiny of 1857; these units came under the administration of the British Crown with Queen Victoria as Empress of India.
