Description
A vintage single-wick table oil lamp with a flat base. This lamp is adorned by two peacocks - one near the rear handle with its plumage forming the thumb-rest and a prominent rounded peacock on the stem of the lamp. The two studs on either side of the spout perhaps represent two peacocks, in vestigial state. The peacock is of great significance in Dokra art, culture and religious heritage and the most popular bird found in Dokra items. Lamps like the one shown here bear testimony to this affinity to nature.

About Everyday Art - Vintage Dokra
Dokra is a non???ferrous metal casting process using the lost-wax casting technique, which has been used in India for more than 4,000 years. Classified as tribal art, Dokra items have a primitive simplicity, enchanting folk motifs and forceful form. Dokra measuring bowls, lamps, caskets etc. embellished with horses, elephants, peacocks, owls and religious images are highly appreciated for their earthiness and affinity to nature. The items for sale in this collection are vintage items of utility created in the Indian villages of West Bengal / Orissa in the mid 20th century and reflect the simplicity of rural life, as it used to be.
