Description

A vintage single-wick table oil lamp with a flat base. This rare lamp features an elephant on the base, which appears to be carrying the lamp on its back. The lamp is further adorned by two peacocks - one near the rear handle with its plumage formingthe thumb-rest and a prominent rounded peacock on the stem of the lamp. The two studs on either side of the spout perhaps represent two peacocks, in vestigial state. The tribal Dokras??? reverence for nature in its many forms finds expression in itemsof daily use like lamps, bowls and boxes. The strength and stability of the elephant and the beauty of the peacock present an unadulterated view of the Dokra people???s simplicity and dependence on nature.
