About The Uncommon Man - R. K. Laxman
India's most ubiquitous cartoonist, R K Laxman, found his calling by sketching whatever he could see out of his window-from twigs and leaves, to lizards on windows and crows on rooftops. At the peak of his career, when he was working with illustrious newspapers like The Hindu and the Times of India, he had created a name for himself as one of the most incisive and funny political cartoonists in print media.
Laxman's famous creation was "The Common Man" for the ToI's daily pocket cartoon series "You Said it". Laxman's bespectacled character was an unobtrusive middle-aged man-caught between modernity and tradition-and a bewildered witness to the absurdist politics of a changing, democratic India.
Our collection of rare offset prints were part of a calendar series that Laxman made for the State Bank of India. Rich with his trademark brand of cheeky wit and good-humoured satire, these limited edition sketches take a dig at financial institutions and their imperturbable approach at the economic predicaments of middle class India.
