About The Visual Archives of Kulwant Roy
Kulwant Roy’s career as a photographer started during his time in the Indian Air Force, and flourished as he rigorously documented Mahatma Gandhi during the nationalist climate of the 1940s. Roy created a wealth of historically significant images on his world tour in 1958 and sent the negatives back home only to find out that they never arrived. Dejected, he faded into obscurity leaving only crates of archival photos to his nephew, Aditya Arya, a contemporary Indian photographer.
Two decades passed before Arya finally opened the crates in 2007. Discovering a remarkable treasure trove of records on modern Indian history, Arya set off on the monumental task of digitizing and archiving these photographs.
StoryLTD brings you a limited edition series of Kulwant Roy’s iconic photographs that venture into the history-making of India, played out through iconographic moments in the country’s narrative.
