About Pichhwais
Pichhwai paintings (‘Pich’ means back and ‘wais’ means hanging in Sanskrit) are cloth paintings used as a back drop to adorn the idol of Lord Shrinath at the Nathdwara temple in Rajasthan.
Originated 400 years ago, these beautiful images often depict the imagined idyllic surroundings of the mythological Vrindavana forest or the lord himself in beautiful surroundings. Since photographs inside the Nathdwara temple are forbidden, Pichhwais are considered by devotees as the only way to take an image of the God home. Big eyes, broad nose, thick bodies and strong colours that are painted on a characteristic gradient style identify the most representative Pichhwai style.
