Description

The abstract prints in this collection are contemplative; meditating on natural, organic forms and appearing as vividly unique landscapes of color. A master printmaker, Reddy pioneered the color viscosity technique at the renowned Atelier 17 in Paris. As seen in these works, by varying ink viscosity and roller density he achieved colors and textures of extraordinary complexity

About Krishna Reddy

The renowned printmaker and sculptor Krishna Reddy was born in Chitoor, Andhra Pradesh in India in 1925. He studied art at the Vishwa-Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal, followed by the Slade School of Fine Arts, University of London from 1951 to 1952. He continued his artistic practice in Europe, working in the studios of Henry Moore in England, Marino Marini in Italy, Ossip Zadkine and Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris. At Atelier 17, he developed a unique printmaking technique in color viscosity intaglio, for which he is most celebrated; printing multi-colored prints from a single printing matrix. Luis R. Cancel, Director, The Bronx Museum of the Arts in speaking of Krishna Reddy’s contribution has said, “…Viscosity color printmaking is, along with the photo transfer process, the most important technical development in printmaking in this century. The ability for the artist to simultaneously print all of his or her colors on one plate was and is quite revolutionary."

An outstanding innovator, Reddy sees the plate as a sculpted surface and intaglio printing as a three-dimensional process. This gives a singular depth and emotion to his printmaking. Awarded the Padma Shree in 1972, Reddy was also recently honored as one of the guest Invitees to the Silvermime National Print Biennial in USA. His works can be found in several private and public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Albertina Museum, Vienna, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. He most recently had retrospective exhibitions at the IGNCA, New Delhi and Sir J J School of Arts, Mumbai.

Krishna Reddy lives and works in New York.
